|
Inhambane
is a city located
in southern Mozambique,
lying on Inhambane
Bay. It is the capital
of the Inhambane
Province and has
a population of
77,000.
OVERVIEW
Founded
by Swahili traders,
the town grew as
a slave port and
ivory trading centre
in the 18 century
under mostly Indian
control. It was
destroyed in 1834
by Soshangane, but
grew rapidly in
the second half
of the century,
from which period
its old cathedral
and old mosque date.
The city is now
home to a museum
and a market and
is known for its
nearby beaches of
Tofo and Barra.
Motor and dhow taxis
sail from the town
to Maxixe.
Inhambane is a photographers
dream; it possesses
a unique charm that
can only originate
from a rusty old
town with dilapidated
buildings and neglected
maintenance. It
is worth exploring
the fascinating
mix of African,
old-world Portuguese
and Muslim cultures.

Almost five centuries
as a Portuguese colony
came to a close with independence
in 1975. Large-scale emigration
by whites, economic dependence
on South Africa, a severe
drought, and a prolonged
civil war hindered the
country's development.
The ruling party formally
abandoned Marxism in 1989,
and a new constitution
the following year provided
for multiparty elections
and a free market economy.
Political stability and
sound economic policies
have encouraged recent
foreign investment.
