GOLF ESTATES
Popular by design
Golf has always been a gentleperson’s sport with integrity and honesty being as much a part of the game as a putter on the green. Said the eminent golf-course architect, Alister MacKenzie, 'It is a remarkable thing about golf courses, that nearly every man and woman has an affection for the particular mud heap on which he plays."

Golfing is as much a national sport in South Africa as rugby and cricket and so it is no surprise that Golf Estates are mushrooming all over South Africa and for good reason. South Africa’s climate and countryside lends itself beautifully to the sport, making it easier for developers and agents to sell stands and homes in Golf Estates more than in any other developments.

Golf Estates have always provided a more secure environment to live and raise families. Statistics show that 50% of residents living in Golf Estates are adamant golfers, whilst the rest of the residents prefer living in Golf Estates because of the tranquil environment and the security offered.

The development of Golf Estates brings about significant economic growth in certain areas. New jobs are created and skills developed, especially beneficial for the unskilled labour force. Not only are new jobs generated, but the influx of foreign currency into South Africa is also encouraged.

DESIGN BY NATURE

Peter Matkovich of Matkovich & Hayes Golf Estate Solutions is a golf course architect who has built and designed amongst others, courses like San Lameer, Pinnacle Point, Steenberg, Arabella & Centurion.

As a true environmentalist, his love of the indigenous remains a cornerstone of his design philosophy that is underlined by his mantra - "Listen to the land - the land and nature must determine the shape, style and direction of play. The design must aesthetically enhance the nature of the environment - not detract from it - as if time and nature herself have shaped the course."

WHO ELS BUT ERNIE

Within the Gardner Ross Golf and Country Estate in Gauteng is the first Ernie Els ‘Signature’ Championship course and one of the longest in the Southern hemisphere, measuring 7,500 metres.

What makes this estate special to Ernie Els is that his grandfather Ernie Vermaak grew up on this exact 690 hectares in and around 1918. Oupa Vermaak was also the instigator of the golf fever that was to take hold of the next two Els generations.

The course is up to USPGA standards and was completed in 2006. The Estate is situated to the west of Centurion, between Johannesburg and Pretoria, on gently rolling countryside with
clear views of the Magaliesberg range and is surrounded by farmland and equestrian estates.

DIFFERENT COURSES FOR DIFFERENT HORSES
Elements Private Golf Reserve Near Bela-Bela, Limpopo Province, set in a game reserve in the rolling foothills of the Waterberg. The full championship layout makes the most of the beautiful bushveld environment by incorporating and bringing into play many trees and pockets of indigenous bush. Its style classification is bushveld and is a par 72.

Pinnacle Point Beach & Golf Resort golf course in Mossel Bay, Western Cape is one of the most spectacular and dramatic locations for a golf course, not only in South Africa but also in the world. The link holes compliment the spectacular cliff-side holes providing balance to the course. This course was recognised as one of the ten best new courses in the world in 2006. Its style classification is coastal and is a par 72.

Steenberg Golf Estate in Cape Town, Western Cape was built on one of the Cape’s oldest wine farms, dating back to 1682. The ‘Steenberg’, or mountain of stone, is the backdrop for the course along with vineyards and mountain forests. The course has a small stream to manage excess water that drains off the mountain. This flows through the course and comes into play on many of the holes. Its style classification is parkland and is a par 72.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE
A top class golf estate is one where there is a balance between an estate that boasts a truly outstanding golf course complemented by the high investment value of its homes, extending to the actual bricks and mortar side rather than the mere speculative value of plots of land.

15 FACTS ON GOLF AND GOLF COURSES
1. A typical 18-hole golf course covers approximately 50 to 60 hectares of land.
2. A typical 18-hole golf course produces enough oxygen to support 4000 to 7000 people.
3. Golf courses nationwide combine to filter 13 million tons of dust from the air every year.
4. Golf courses have a cooling effect during the hot summer months. The average temperature on the golf course is typically 5- 7 degrees cooler than a residential area and 7 - 15 degrees cooler than an urban setting.
5. Golf courses delay play on frost-covered turf (especially greens) because stepping on frost-covered grass causes the frozen leaf cells to rupture. The turf will turn brown and eventually die.
6. What is the origin of the stimpmeter? In the early 1900s, a man by the name of Edward Stimpson was looking for a means to create more fairness in the game of golf. Specifically, he was looking to make putting surfaces on a particular course all relatively the same speed. He developed the stimpmeter to achieve this purpose. By using this device, he could determine, for example, if the fourth green was the same speed of the 17th. The device is often misused and misinterpreted by the novice and avid golfer alike. It is best used to compare greens on the same course, not to compare greens from one course to another.
7. What does it mean to syringe a green? Syringing is the process of spraying a light cover of water on a green during hot weather to reduce the temperature of the turf. This prevents putting surfaces from becoming “baked” and “dried-out,” and having a negative impact on putting surface quality.
8. What is topdressing? It is the practice of spreading material over a putting green to level and smooth the surface. The material is generally sand and/or organic matter that improves drainage, controls thatch and maintains biological balance.
9. There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball.
10. Dimples on a golf ball reduce drag by creating turbulence as the ball flies through the air.
11. Annika Sörenstam, a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), was the first woman to participate in the men's PGA tournament since 1945.
12. The first PGA Championship was held in 1916 and was won by Jim Barnes.
13. The first LPGA Championship was held in 1955 and was won by Beverly Hanson.
14. In 1988, Jack Nicklaus was honoured with the PGA's Golfer of the Century Award.
15. "Stroke play" refers to a round of golf in which the score is kept by adding the cumulative total of strokes taken throughout the round. Stroke play is different from match play, but means the same thing as medal play.
