Zanzibar
is a paradise and the Monsoon
Garden village is heavenly.
On
a gentle slope facing the
Indian Ocean, by the village
of Pingwe, five magnificent
houses are being built. ‘Monsoon
Garden’ is located at
Pingwe, a village on the east
coast set on 2km of unspoilt
beach.
The development site overlooks
one of the most beautiful
beachfronts on the east coast
of Zanzibar.

A
village within a village, each house
has been individually designed to
reflect its unique position within
the site, and differing potential
habitation.
There’s
an intimacy to the internal courtyard
of “Dar House”, contrasting
with the grander colonnaded façade
of “Pavilion House”.
With its entrance arch and hint of
previous settlement, the aim is for
the buildings to blend in with the
immediate environment and refer to
its past.
LUXURIOUS HOMES
Separate,
but integrally linked to the village,
each house is distinct in its own
character. Each has a traditional
Zanzibar door leading to a spacious
entrance hall, and from then, its
own specific narrative, imbued with
its own “personality”.
All
are built from natural materials available
locally with indigenous Makute (palm
‘thatch’) roofing creating
natural protection and climate control.
External
and internal walls will be finished
with a combination of natural plaster,
bleached lime render, coral rag (locally
quarried stone) and Zanzibar stone
(a rich tobacco colour). The cooling
apertures of the palm wood windows,
screens and shutters, punctuate all.
Each
house has a roof terrace facing west
across the village to watch the sun
set, filtering though the palms and
the wisps of the smoke trails from
the evenings cooking fires.
A
number of the bedrooms have private
terraces. Private plunge pools add
to the number of places and ways to
relax and cool off day or night. |

THE
EARTH’S ELEMENTS
The Monsoon Garden means being at home with
all the elements of its surroundings. Respecting
the natural environment has been paramount
in the creation of this development.
• The most precious resource, water,
has been harvested. Underground tanks for
the rainwater and a system of recycling
are
• designed
into the project, to conserve water.
• The most abundant resource, the
sun, has been harnessed to its maximum potential.
A solar and photovoltaic system heats
• water
and provides ample lighting respectively.

WELCOMING
HAVEN
The shared swimming pool has been designed
to offer a relaxing haven, a naturalistic
lagoon between the beach and the private
gardens.
A welcoming shared watering hole, with separate
decked area around its serpentine curves,
also provides privacy between households. |
ACTIVITIES
The number one activity is probably hanging
out on the beach and swimming in the tidal
lagoon, which is sand bottomed, so it looks
amazing and no shredded feet.
Zanzibar
is reputed to have some of the best diving
in the world, and the coral reef structures
that surround Unguja and Pemba ensure that
the marine life is abundant.
Good
visibility (20m to 60m) and a year-round
average water temperature of 27°c ensures
that you enjoy your Zanzibar scuba diving
experience, but it also presents an ideal
opportunity for learning to scuba dive or
upgrading your diving qualification. |

EATING
OUT AND AT HOME
The
nearest restaurant to Monsoon Garden is
the stunning “Rocky” restaurant;
a mere 5 minutes stroll along the beach.
The area is well served with other places
to eat both locally and further a field.
Feast
of Flavours
Zanzibar
cuisine has evolved as a result of the many
exotic influences passed down through the
ages.
Garnering a bounty of spices, tropical fruits
and vegetable from around the island and
seafood from its very own shoreline, the
cuisine is rich in variety.
Italian
food is quite popular as well as Chinese,
Indian and other ethnic cuisines, which
are found in some restaurants hotels and
small beach bars all around the coast. In
our experience the local dishes could not
be more delicious and healthy.
From the rooftop restaurants of Stone Town
to the evening beach barbeque at Mtoni Marine,
or over water deck of Akuna Matata at a
village called Bububu, there's plenty of
high quality choice.
|
 |
Personal
Cuisine
You
will be tempted to enjoy meals in
your own beach house (Domestic help
is widely available). Whether people
cook for themselves or employ a chef,
there's a pleasure in making the most
of the natural and tasty fresh food
that is native to Zanzibar. |
