number and variety of living
organisms; including genetic
diversity, species diversity,
and ecological diversity. |
|
|
What
is conservation?
The profession devoted to the
preservation of natural or cultural
property for the future. Conservation
activities include examination,
documentation, treatment, and
preventive care, supported by

KALAHARI
The Kalahari, one of Southern Africa’s
most internationally recognised regions,
is attracting growing interest since
it was added to Pam Golding Properties’
Nature Portfolio. |
|
 |
Location
Situated in central Southern Africa,
the Kalahari region is an ancient
and pristine biome. Formerly inhabited
by the San or Bushmen, much of the
land is now occupied by sheep and
cattle farmers, but large areas have
been set aside for conservation and
tourism.
Conservation
The largest conservation area in the
Kalahari - the Kgalagadi Transfrontier
Park - covers 3.7 million hectares,
making it one of the world’s
largest wilderness areas.
|
Two
major ecoregions dominate the Kgalagadi:
semi-desert and dry savannah.
The
wildlife regime consists of 298 species
of birds, 58 species of mammal, 55
species of reptile, and countless
insect and plant species.
Playground
This vast, but sparsely populated,
area is fast becoming a playground
for adventurous spirits and seekers
of the extreme who wish to participate
in the conservation of this magnificent
region.
The area is characterised by red sands,
parallel white dunes and rolling grasslands
dotted with camel thorn trees. Despite
its aridity, it is home to the world’s
sixth largest waterfall.
Popular
Many of South Africa’s leading
personalities already invest in this
region. There is also strong interest
in, and investment from Northern European
and Gulf States.

KAROO
HIGHLANDS
Location
The Karoo Highlands straddles
all three Cape provinces and
consists of three mountain ranges
that form the Great Escarpment
- the watershed between the
Indian and Atlantic oceans.
The closest main towns are Beaufort
West and Graaff-Reinet.
Popular
Like the Kalahari, the Karoo
Highlands is safe and full of
valuable conservation properties.
This region has become the most
popular for South Africans,
with a growing awareness of
its virtues attracting foreign
investors.
Biodiversity
This area has some of the highest
biodiversity found in the Cape
provinces. The return of the
vulture, eland, mountain zebra,
leopard and other species, that
were long extinct, has begun.
So
has begun the restoration of
the mountain wetland sponges
that attract hundreds of cranes
and flamingos. The Karoo Highlands
ensures the conservation of
the Great Escarpment horizon. |
Opportunities
Large tracts of land have been
purchased for lifestyle purposes
whose owners are participating
in the conservation of the nature
and wildlife of this magnificent
mountainous region. The reasons
why conservation-minded investors
choose the Karoo Highlands is
because of its remote accessibility,
healthy climate and amazing
landscapes.

ORANGE
RIVER
Location
The Orange River, one
of South Africa's major rivers,
rises in the Drakensberg Mountains
in Lesotho, where it is known
as the Senqu.
From where the river leaves
Lesotho, it flows westward for
some 2200km through most of
the climatic regions until it
finally flows into the Atlantic
Ocean at Alexander Bay.
 |
Conservation
The Orange River does
not pass any industrialised
or heavily populated built
up areas.
It is ecologically important
as it provides a belt
of green vegetation through
an otherwise hot and dry
desert. The Orange River
has a number of conservation
nodes.
The Orange River estuary
is the sixth most important
coastal wetland in South
Africa.
It is an important stopover
for large numbers of north-south
migrating birds and has
been declared a Ramsar
site.
|
(A
Ramsar site is a statutory
designation adopted following
an international conference,
held in 1971 in Ramsar,
Iran, which identifies
Wetlands of International
Importance).
The area around Lake Gariep
or the eastern half of
the river has many conservation
priorities to preserve
the riverine vegetation
on the banks of the river.
Opportunities
Some special opportunities
exist to partner with
nature conservation projects
for the extension of existing
provincial reserves on
the river.
In the western drier region
there are new conservation
opportunities for pioneers,
with large tracts of land
and many kilometres of
river frontage, and many
wild animals still in
their natural habitat.

GREATER
ADDO
Location
The Greater Addo Conservation
Area extends from the
plains in the North near
Darlington (Lake Mentz)
to the coast around the
Sundays River Estuary.
Included
are the magnificent Zuurberg
Mountains and the Alexandria
dune fields and forests.
The marine zone extends
to Bird and St Croix islands.
The
area is easily accessed
from the N2 on both the
Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown
sides.
Biodiversity
With the emphasis on the
conservation of biodiversity,
the complete wildlife
experience is possible
across a series of landscapes
unrivalled in beauty,
all within a single conservation
area.
Only
wildlife species found
in the area are to be
reintroduced. The area
is an exciting destination
for nature-based tourism. |
Conservation
Some of the objectives
are to preserve intact
a viable example of Valley
Bushveld (Valley Thicket)
and viable populations
of Addo elephant, African
buffalo and East African
rhino (the desert-adapted
rhino species) and other
fauna characteristics
of the Addo area.
The maintenance of a mosaic
of plant communities maintains
the diversity of all species
within each community.
|
 |
Opportunities
The ever-increasing size of
the Addo National Park, combined
with the fact that the Eastern
Cape is one of the main wildlife
regions in Southern Africa,
has increased demand for property
that has formal agreements with
SAN Parks.
Many
property investment opportunities
are centred on the tourism potential
of the area with concessions
in Addo or with adjoining landowners
participating in the greater
Addo wildlife initiatives.

FAST
FACTS ON SOUTH AFRICAN CONSERVATION |
|
|
 |
|
Biome
map
South Africa
has seven major
terrestrial biomes,
or habitat types
- broad ecological
life zones with
distinct environmental
conditions and related
sets of plant and
animal life.
(Graphic:

Africa)
|
| • |
Biodiversity
- We have
the third-highest
level of biodiversity
in the world,
and ours is
the only country
to host an
entire floral
kingdom. |
| • |
The
Cape Peninsula
National Park
has more plant
species within
its 22000
hectares than
the entire
British Isles
or New Zealand. |
|
 |
|
| • |
Some
18000 species
of vascular
plant
(plants with
vessels for
bearing sap)
occur within
South Africa's
boundaries,
of which 80%
occur nowhere
else. |
| • |
Our
incredible
biodiversity
is due to
our unique
physical features.
Most of the
country is
situated on
a high-lying
plateau, between
two very different
oceans. |
| • |
The
Indian Ocean,
on the east,
is warmed
by the Mozambique
or Agulhas
Current, which
flows down
from the tropics,
while the
Atlantic Ocean
on the west
coast, is
cooled by
the icy Benguela
Current, which
comes up from
the Antarctic.
|
|
 |
|
| • |
These
two different
oceans, the
prevailing
wind and the
topography
of South Africa
combine to
create lush
forests and
subtropical
savannah on
the east coast,
gradually
changing to
desert or
semi-desert
on the west
coast. |
| • |
Alien
vegetation.
South Africa’s
Working for

 |
|
| • |
Coastal
care.
South Africa’s

world, with
the country

first outside
Europe to
gain Blue

for its coastal
